Safety of workers with pacemakers – review of essential procedures

A growing number of workers carry pacemakers or implanted automatic defibrillators. Like any electronic device, these devices are sensitive to electromagnetic interference and can then have an erratic operation which can go as far as a complete stop of their operation or, in the case of defibrillators, produce a spontaneous electrical discharge. However, technological advances in recent years have considerably reduced the sensitivity of these devices to interference and the probability of interaction varies greatly depending on the type of device, the manufacturer and the date of manufacture.
